Loose Threads
Ever since I could remember my grandma has made quilts. To have one of her quilts is so special because she customizes them to each person. She took years to gift me mine as she was hunting down a specific fabric. I came across a quilting method on Tik Tok, a way to handsew without a sewing machine, and thinking of my grandmother, I was really excited to give it a shot. I fell in love with it. I quilt everywhere. I quilt at work, at school, at home, while eating–I enjoy sewing individual pieces of fabric together to get this crazy cohesive blanket. It has become very therapeutic to me.
Quilts often get shoved into closets. People are scared to use them for fear of wear and tear. But quilts are made to be used, to be loved, to be worn down to just threads. Of course, they can also be hung and appreciated. A lot of time and effort goes into making a quilt, I’ve come to realize that most people don’t know this. This realization was brought to me by a professor; by watching me make my quilts he could see beyond the finished product and see the process and time that went into it. My exhibition is meant to share this love of quilting, to show viewers what goes into making them and to encourage them to love and appreciate this tradition.
